Felix Baumgartner breaks sound barrier

Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner broke the sound barrier when he jumped from a capsule 128,100 feet (24.2 miles) above sea level on his free fall dive to earth.  He landed on his feet the New Mexico desert.

The historical jump which was sponsored by Red Bull, known as the Stratos Mission to the Edge of Space, seven years in the planning was successfully executed at 12.08 MDT Sunday 14th October 2012, sixty five years after Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier, in a rocket powered aircraft, in 1947.

The 43 year old achieved a free fall speed of 833.9 miles per hour during the 4 minutes and 19 seconds descent. Felix Baumgartner dropped 119,846 feet before activating his parachute. He now plans to retire.

The jump broke three world records* 

• Speed of sound barrier in a high tech suit - 1,342.8 Km/h (Mach 1.2)
• Highest manned ballon flight - 128,097 feet
• HIghest altitude freefall - 128,000 feet
